For some reason, almost all of my drawings start out with a dedicated
line. For this reason, I consider myself a "linesman". That's
a term normally used to describe a football player on the front line
or a ref in a tennis match, but I also like to use it to describe
an artist that makes use of the line in his or her art. Most artists
are linesmans because most art pieces get outlined before they are
painted or committed to. It all starts with the line. To me a sketch
is really just an approach to find a line. The line defines.
I've been drawing since I think I was probably about 10 years old.
It used to be a pasttime for some of my friends and I. After skateboarding
down Sandcastle, or cardboarding down a 45° hill in Buck Gulley
on a voting booth with ski goggles on, one of us would say, "Hey
wanna go draw?" So, we'd go sit down at whoever's Mom's kitchen
or dining room table and draw weird stuff for a couple hours. Then
we'd show it to each other and try and freak the other guy out. Sometimes
it worked.
I continued to draw through high school, college and even a little
bit through law school. All the while, never recognizing my ability
or talent (call it what you like), as a means to make a living. It's
probably a good thing, because I'd have even more boxes of weird drawings
sitting in my closet. These days, I draw as much as possible (time permitting), trying
crank out as many Quotoons™ as possible. It just depends on
how busy my web design and development business gets, and when the
waves pick up, well....then,.. take care and bye-bye now....!
